From the publisher... The two-month issue in January-February turned out to be a nice way to package the content of Patron, so we decided to continue the practice. The INTERACT calendar contains more than 50 events to attend and activities in which to participate. Who says there’s nothing to do in Minot? The Northwest Art Center at Minot State University presents the MSU Biennial Faculty Art Show. We present artwork from six faculty members: Walter Piehl, Douglas Pfliger, Avis Veikley, Jim Bailey, Patrick Sheldon, and Bill Harbort. Don’t miss the opportunity to view the works of these talented artists. MSU Professor Rick Watson discusses his History of Pop and Rock Music class. During a class session, Mr. Watson led the students in a discussion of Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” which he uses to present the concept of popular culture in America. Growing from offering 2,000 book to more than 16,000, Val Stadick of Main Street Books plans a fourth anniversary celebration on March 27. The bookstore offers an array of toys in addition to new and used books. She plans to offer special programming on the anniversary and dates prior to the celebration. Denise Lindbo, owner of Gourmet Chef in downtown Minot, documents some eco-friendly kitchen tools. We offer this article in observance of the fortieth anniversary of Earth Day on April 22. We’ve all heard the news: The main-stream media (MSM) in the national and metropolitan arenas is in trouble. Traditional mediums – radio, television, magazines, and newspapers – are feeling the pinch. More choice – especially on the Internet – and bad economics, stemming from fewer users of the media, to the recession are factors. Professional swimmer Matt Lowe, formerly of Minot, has set his sights on the London Olympics in 2012. Talking about his career currently, he said, “It can’t get any better than this.” Oh, yeah? We bet it can. We bet he would like to have “Olympian” next to his name. |
